Pink and Gold it seems go together well! Many of the NA Tiger crew sported pink in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, but they also turned their attention to gold as the crew managed many top place finishes in this past weekends Head of the Ohio Regatta. The weather was ideal for fall racing, and with a finish at the Point, the racing was picture perfect.

The city of Toledo served up great weather for the 2015 Frogtown regatta. The Tigers competed in both sweep and sculling events, bringing home multiple top-3 finishes. This was a nice venue to watch a race with many river and bridge viewing spots. The race also had a "surprise" entry, a large materials transport ship that gracefully made its way down the river during the event!

The Tigers kicked off the 2015-2016 season by competing at the Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta in Cleveland Ohio.  The rain held off for most of the day, and the Cuyahoga
river was as challenging as ever with many twists and bends to demand navigation skills as well as rowing power!  The Cuyahoga brings strong competition from the surrounding states so is always a good test early in the season.
Great job to all the crews who participated!

The Tigers wrapped up the 2015 season by competing in the Stotesbury Cup regatta this past weekend in Philadelphia, PA.  This is a very large race - the largest scholastic competition by far - where thousands of rowers participate.  Quite a site!
Great job to all the crews who participated, and to the entire NARA team for a solid season given all of the challenges that they had to overcome.

This past weekend the Tigers competed at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association Championships, held at Dillon Lake in Nashport Ohio.
Our team advanced through the qualifying heats to have a number of boats reach the semi and final races, and the Women's JV 4+ took a repeat Gold medal by winning their event on Sunday morning.
Great job to all the crews who participated, and good luck at Stotesbury this coming weekend!

where local rowing clubs from all over the Pittsburgh area compete in a variety of races, including novice events.
The Tigers placed well in a competitive field, earning medals in a number of events including a gold in the Women's JV 4+ competition.

Fundraising Information
The North Allegheny Rowing Boathouse and all contents was destroyed in a catastrophic fire on the night of Saturday, December 27th, 2014.  This is a sad and tragic event for our rowers who work hard and tirelessly to prepare for competition each spring and fall.
We are a self-funded club at North Allegheny, and are so thankful for the outlay of support already received from other rowing clubs, the NA school district, local and regional organizations, our parents, and NA alumni.  Our goal is to have our kids back on the water for spring racing.
Many of our supporters have expressed interest in how they can help rebuild our program.  Coach Dan and Jordan have setup an initial fundraising campaign via for monetary donations.  Please click on the link below to contribute, or contact Coach Dan directly at to discuss other ways to contribute as well as areas where we will be in need of assistance for equipment.
Thank you so much for your support!
NARA Board, our Coaches, Athletes and Parents and NA Athletics
Thanks to Coaches Dan, Jordan and to Dori Tompa of Steey City for organizing a scrimmage this past Saturday for our clubs to engage in some friendly competition!
The water was calm and our rowers had the opportunity to compete in multiple events, as it made a great chance to get in some significant water time given the recent weather challenges(!).  Our team was thrilled to have access to some sculling equipment as well!
Many thanks to Steel City crew and volunteers for the hospitality and food!  A great time was had by all.

The Tigers opened the 2015 Spring Season by competing in the Mercer Lake Sprints
this past weekend near Princeton, NJ.  The regatta was a 2 day event, and plays host
to some of the best teams on the East Coast.
The weather was perfect with abundant sunshine, and It was a good feeling to be back
on the water, especially with our new fleet.  The rowing was against tough competition,
and the Tigers managed to have 2 boats qualify for semi-finals on Sunday.

The boats are here!!!!  Our shiny Vespoli fleet (three 8+'s and three 4+'s) were delivered safely to the Three Rivers Rowing Millvale boathouse, along with the oars and supporting equipment.
Coach Jordan, Dan, Todd and the team captains dodged the snowflakes and led the team and parent volunteers through rigging the boats, setup of the oars, and preparations needed for getting out on the water.
Many thanks to Three Rivers Rowing for their support in hauling the boats (from the east coast) and all of their help in securing us a place to row in the spring.

2015 Spring Rigging

The Tigers kicked off the Winter / Spring indoor competition with the annual Pittsburgh Indoor Sprints hosted by Three Rivers Rowing.  This was an ERG race and offers many events including coxswains and adaptive rowing competition.
The Tigers medaled in 2 events, but more importantly over half of the team posted a personal best (a "PR" in rowing-speak) in their individual categories...a strong start to the season!
A BIG THANK YOU goes out to Three Rivers Rowing for allowing us to fundraise at the event to help with our rebuilding efforts!

2015 Pgh Indoor Sprints

Competition and fun was on the menu, as well as a great selection of food prepared by our hosts, Steel City Rowing, who offered our athletes a final chance for some racing on the water (before a long winter training season!).
The Tigers competed against both Steel City and Allderdice High School crews in a 2k course on the Allegheny River.  Our crews rowed head to head and also in mixed boats , as it is a great way to meet and interact with our fellow teams in the city.
This was a great way to wrap up the season, and a big thank you to Coach Tompa and her team at Steel City for the fun time had by all!!

2014 Fall Steel City Scrimmage

The Tigers wrapped up the fall regatta season at the Head of the Occoquan Regatta in Occoquan Virginia.  This year was the biggest regatta to date, both in terms of club participation as well as spectators!  The Tigers pushed through harsh and windy rowing conditions to bring home medals in 3 events, along with other top 10 placements in heats with 20+ entries - a strong showing on one of the more challenging courses in the country.  Coach Dan and Coach Jordan also participated, rowing a mixed double in the first event of the morning.
Due to the popularity of this years event trailer parking was limited, and a big wide brimmed white hat thank you goes to Coach Bergen (for driving down a day early) and to our Groveton boathouse neighbors (Robert Morris and Pine Richland) for helping with a plan to get all 3 clubs boats to the event on 1 trailer.
Thanks to all who participated and congratulations team on a great fall season!

The Tigers have an upcoming dual meet scrimmage and then wrap up the fall season at the Head of the Occoquan in Virginia the first Sunday of November.

2014 HEAD OF THE OHIO, OCTOBER 4th, 2014
The weather was challenging for this years Head of the Ohio Head Race, hosted by Three Rivers Rowing.  Rain, wind and cold combined to scratch the singles, doubles and all afternoon events.  The Tigers were able to compete in the morning events, including Girls Quad and Mens and Womens 8+, with each NA boat bringing home a medal in their respective event.  The HOTO photo album can be found HERE.
Go Tigers, and better luck for great weather next weekend in Columbus!

The Tigers held a dual-meet scrimmage at the Groveton Boathouse versus Fox Chapel this past Saturday.  The water was ideal for sprint racing conditions and the races were very competitive!  Our novices also took to the water with their first competition rowing of the season.  Results can be viewed as a PDF by clicking this link 27-Sep-2014 Scrimmage Results

Pittsburgh Scholastic Sprints
It has been a Spring of overcoming challenges and the Pgh Sprints were no exception.  Early in the week there was discussion of canceling the race due to the forecast river conditions.  Fortunately, the flow didn't reach the forecast level and, with some last minute modifications including cancelling some events ( singles and doubles where we are very competitive), the race was able to go on.  Our coaches did a great job putting together alternate line ups, and our team rose to the task, even in events where we had to race novice rowers against more experienced crews.
Some notable finishes:
Women's Quad: NA was 1st, 2nd and 4th
Men's JV Four: NA was 1st (this was a boat of novice guys racing in a JV category)
Women's Novice Eight: NA was 1st (lightweight boat) and 2nd (open weight boat)
Men's Quad: NA was 2nd, 3rd and 4th
Men's Novice Eight: NA got 1st (beating Central Catholic!!!!!)
Women's Lightweight Four: NA was 3rd
Women's JV Four: NA was 1st and 3rd
Men's Varsity Lightweight Four: NA was 4th (NA novice guys competing against varsity rowers)
Women's varsity Eight: NA was 3rd
Men's Varsity Eight: NA was 3rd
Our thanks go out to Mark Bellinger who did a fantastic job of organizing and reorganizing the race as the conditions changed, and to our volunteer parents who were a great help through the morning.
North Allegheny captured the most medals of any participating team at the regatta and won the overall team points trophy. We had a great day for racing and we were able to get in some much needed race practice before Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championships this coming weekend.  See you at Dillon Lake!

2014 Governors Cup

 2014 SPRING SEASON
April update
The weather has been much more cooperative, and we have had some very productive days on the water.  The crews are responding well, as the younger crews make great strides and the senior crews look for ways to carve extra inches out of each stroke.  The racing season is quickly approaching, with a dual meet at Steel City,  Mercer Lake and Ohio Governors Cup in April.  In practice, we are working through the three race phases, the start, the middle and the sprint.  We are also doing some seat racing, showing us which crews in what order make the fastest boats.   We look forward to seeing everyone at the regattas this spring !
Weather dependent, we are usually on the water Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturdays.  Thursdays are land practice at NAI.  The practice schedule is:
Monday:            MENS team leaves NASH at 2:45pm, returns at 5:45pm
WOMENS team leaves NASH at 4:30pm, returns at 7:30pm

The success of NA's rowing team over the past few years has garnished attention from many collegiate coaches. This year, 4 seniors have committed to collegiate rowing programs.
Braedon Jelinek has verbally committed to Division I Drexel University.  Among his career highlights was ranking 23rd in the world at the Crash B competition last February in Boston.  Julianna Malachin, a 4-year varsity letterman will be joining Lehigh University's Women's rowing team.  Leah Griffin, also a 4-year varsity letterman and team captain, selected Mercyhurst University's rowing program.  Jess Goldstein, with just 2 years of rowing, accepted an offer to row at Duquesne University.  The three women, in addition to junior Karley Whelan, comprised the crew of the Women's Quad that took gold at Midwest Regionals & placed 4th at Scholastic Nationals last June.

Pictured below, on right, middle seat, is senior Braedon Jelinek.
